Predatory publishing in Scopus: Evidence on cross-country differences

Abstract Predatory publishing represents a major challenge to scholarly communication. This paper maps the infiltration of journals suspected predatory practices into citation database Scopus and examines cross-country differences in propensity scholars publish such journals. Using names “potential, possible, or probable” publishers on Beall’s lists, we derived ISSNs 3,293 from Ulrichsweb searched with them. A total 324 that appear both lists Scopus, 164,000 articles published during 2015–2017 were identified. Analysis data for 172 countries four fields research indicates there is remarkable heterogeneity. In most affected countries, including Kazakhstan Indonesia, around 17% journals, while some other have no this category whatsoever. Countries large sectors at medium level economic development, especially Asia North Africa, tend be susceptible publishing. Policy makers stakeholders these developing need pay more attention quality evaluation.
